Below is a list of drought tolerant plants, many of which have adaptations and mechanisms such as waxy (green leafed) or grey hairy leaves, to avoid moisture loss through transpiration.
Bear in mind however that most plants, regardless of how drought tolerant they are, in the establishment period until the root system has developed and the plant is large enough, will need to be watered and looked after. This period, depending on the plant, can be a couple of years!
Other factors to consider, which will help in the establishment of the plant and its viability in a low water environment are:
1) Proper positioning. Hostas will survive dry spells but they need shade. Equally Helleborus prefer summer shade and winter sun, so placing them under deciduous trees is ideal. In this sense a holistic approach is needed, where larger established trees will create a more benign environment for smaller shrubs which in turn will create a more suitable environment for herbaceous perennials.
2) Soil conditioning. Increasing the organic / humus content of soils will improve the soil’s water retention and also aid in the ability of the plant’s roots to go deeper. It also helps the soil’s ability to absorb water and to limit run off when a plant is watered; the correct fertilization and Ph / soil type for the plant is also essential.
3) Mulch, mulch, mulch, mulch and use devices such as agricultural drainage pipes when planting to take water deep to the roots
In our garden most plants are not watered at all except in the most extreme hot weather. At the end of January 09 there was a string of days with temperatures over 43C and a week either side of over 30C . In that period even drought tolerant and hardy plants were stressed and needed water.
